What’s on recommendations for your February lodge holiday
Welcome to our latest What’s On blog post. Your round up of events and activities to help you make the most of a February lodge holiday close to the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks.
We’re already anticipating the arrival of lighter evenings and extra time in the glorious countryside surrounding Lakeland Lodges. And we know that we say this every post, but it really is the perfect time to make the most of our enviable location. Here’s our What’s On shortlist for February…
1. Folk Art Exhibition, until April 2018.
The Lake District has a long history of communities making art and the latest exhibition at the Museum of Lakeland Life in Kendal explores why people devote time and effort to making beautiful objects. It also reveals the unique and fascinating stories behind the 40,000 objects. This is a great way to learn more about Cumbria, its people, and the sports and talents that they’ve devoted themselves to. The Museum is located close to the Brewery Arts Centre and to Abbot Hall Art Gallery, so there’s a full day of culture, history and art awaiting.
2. Jazz Lunch, February 16th 2018 (12.30 – 2.30pm).
Head to the Refreshment Room at Carnforth Station Heritage Centre and you can enjoy the fully restored 1940s setting of David Lean’s film, Brief Encounter, and a tasty lunch accompanied by live jazz from Morecambe’s High Society Jazz Band. They play on the third Friday of most months but if your visit doesn’t coincide with that, you can still enjoy the ‘Brief Encounter’ exhibition, which features photographs and lots of interesting information about the film – particularly the famous Rachmaninov score. Following a recent revamp, the film now shows all day on their big screen.
3. Northcote Cookery Course, February 9th & 10th.
Nigel at Northcote has 30 years worth of cooking experience and this course combines ‘timeless classics’ with ‘today’s favourites’. The course promises ‘a menu that will impress all your dinner party guests.’ And what’s more, everything you cook during the course is wrapped up and ready for you to take home – dinner party in the lodge anyone? Dishes include Mushroom & Garlic Tumble Weeds, Black Pudding & Buttered Pink Trout, Mustard & Watercress Sauce, Newspaper Wrapped Garlic Goosnargh Chicken, Blue Cheese, Chicken Scraps, and Alphonso Mango & Ginger Cheesecake. Participants also get morning coffee, a 2-course lunch, and afternoon tea!
4. Dukes Theatre, various dates in February
The Dukes Theatre is a great venue for an evening of cinema, theatre, comedy or art. In the heart of Lancaster, it is also surrounded by great places to eat before or after a showing. February’s calendar is packed with films, performances and comedy. Highlights include a cinema viewing of the RSC’s Twelfth Night, a cinema screening of NT Live: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, plus Call Me By your Name, and, All the Money in the World. There’s comedy from Fern Brady, Sophie Willan, Kriss Foster and Rob Auton, and theatre performances of Chip Shop Chips, The Owl and the Pussycat and Hard Times. Which one will you choose?
5. Dark Sky Festival Stargazing at Brockholes Nature Reserve
Saturday 24th February
Experience an unforgettable night under the stars at Brockholes nature reserve near Preston. Local Astronomer Robert Ince, will take you on an incredible journey through the constellations and along the Milky Way, while also showing you how to find all sorts of heavenly objects for yourself. You can try powerful telescopes and binoculars and ask any questions you have about ‘life, the universe and everything!’ Even if the weather does not co-operate there are colourful talks, videos and hands on help with telescopes, together with friendly advice on how to get started with stargazing. Advanced booking is required. Be quick as this is always a popular event.
