Run by volunteers with the aim of promoting knowledge of plants particularly suited to Lakeland conditions, Holehird is also one of the best labelled gardens in the UK. It’s home to national collections of astilbe, daboecia, polystichum (ferns) and meconopsis. And it’s set up on the fellside with stunning views over Lake Windermere. The walled garden gives protection to mixed borders whilst alpine houses display an always colourful array of tiny gems. The banks of daffodils are also a sight to behold in Spring.
