Walking recommendations for your Autumn lodge holiday

We love this time of year and know that many of our guests include walking in the itinerary for their autumn lodge holiday – the colours, the soft mists, and the wildlife are all well worth a look.

As this is the first of our walking blogs here at Lakeland Lodges, we thought we’d start with routes close to the site. As we’re only 30 minutes from the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks, there are of course many higher level and longer walks to be enjoyed too.

The three walks that we’ve chosen are all connected to some of our favourite local villages, and we highly recommend rewarding yourselves with either a drink in one of the many good pubs, a slice of something nice in a café or tearoom, or a meal in one of our hand-picked eateries – we’ve recommended one of each for each of the three walks. Enjoy!

Arnside

This lovely village is part of the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and is nestled on the edge of the Kent Estuary so you can enjoy fantastic coastal views across the sands. The fast rising tide, or bore, is quite a sight if you time your visit right – it signals the power of nature in the area, which (it’s also worth noting) also includes quicksands.

Walk: High Arnside Knott (5.5 miles, 3 hours, medium difficulty)

As the guide says, this walk is great for energetic dogs and for the stunning views from the top of Arnside Knott. The mix of sands, woodland and then the limestone tops make for an interesting and varied route and parking is easy to find at this time of year (and free!).

Kirkby Lonsdale

Kirkby Lonsdale is one of our favourite local villages due to its mix of independent retailers and great places to eat and drink. It’s also a chance to stock up on some grocery shopping for your lodge as it’s home to popular northern supermarket, Booths.

Walk: Circular Whittington Ramble (4.8 miles, 2 hours 30 minutes, easy difficulty)

If you enjoy riverbank rambles mixed with rolling hills and farmland, this is a fabulous walk. It’s ideal for dogs but please keep them on a lead through the farmland phases. Starting at Devil’s Bridge (free parking), it’s a circular route that takes in the village of Whittington. Guide here.

Carnforth Canal Walks

Okay, we are cheating (again!) as we’ve picked four local walks and claimed them as one. But they do all follow parts of the Carnforth Canal, and all of them are super easy, and low level. They are ideal for dogs and you’ll find there are lots of four-legged friends to greet you along the way.

Booklet here. The canal is owned and managed by British Waterways, they actively encourage walkers to use the towpath to enjoy the quiet, peaceful pursuit of a canal-side stroll.
