Walking recommendations for your lodge holiday near the Yorkshire Dales

This is the second of our walking blog posts here at Lakeland Lodges and, having started with routes close to the site, we’re venturing further afield this month. We’ve got three different walk recommendations for your lodge holiday near the Yorkshire Dales – and some lovely pub and café stops to go with them.

Malham Tarn

 This lovely village is small but hugely popular. The village has a good selection of pubs and cafés and is also home to the Malham National Park Centre. But the real attraction is the walking – we’ve gone with a route that takes in Malham Tarn, but there’s also Malham Cove, Janet’s Foss, and Gordale Scar to explore.

Walk: Malham Tarn, Malham (2.6 miles, 1 hour 30 minutes, easy)

Malham Tarn is an internally-significant wetland area and it is absolutely stunning. This short linear walk takes you along its shores and, dependent on when you visit, gives you the chance to spot some of the birds that frequent the Tarn. Look out for great crested grebe, tufted duck, pochard, wigeon, teal, goosander and, occasionally, hen harrier.

Sedbergh

Sedbergh is a lovely market town with an old-world feel and an enviable setting in the Yorkshire Dales National Park close to the rugged fells of the eastern Lake District. Take some time to wander its cobbled streets and admire the historic houses, some of which still show the hallmarks of the wool trade that helped the area to thrive. 

Walk: Winder from Sedbergh (3.4 miles, 2 hours 30 minutes, moderate difficulty)

Winder Fell is a really popular walk from Sedbergh. It’s an ideal route as it is close to the town and its facilities yet the summit of the Fell provides amazing views of the Lake district hills, Shap Fell, the Lune Valley down to Morecambe Bay, and the Yorkshire Dales. This route follows village lanes, fell paths, and a grassland summit and you’ll be ready for a brew or a bite to eat when you complete it.

Ingleton

Ingleton is famed for its surrounding countryside, with visitors able to explore its nearby caves, waterfalls and mountains. It’s right on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales and a great introduction to all that the National Park has to offer. There’s a large car park and a visitor centre at the top of the village, which also makes an ideal meeting point if you are travelling in a larger group.

Walks: Ingleton Waterfalls (3-4 hours, family friendly)

Route here. The land is owned by Ingleton Scenery Company and there is a charge to access the route (about £10 for a family ticket), but it is beautifully maintained and a fantastic walk for the whole family or larger groups with varying levels of walking experience. The route takes in Pecca Falls, Thornton Force, Beezley Falls and Snow Falls and there are plenty of opportunities for a good paddle and splash about.
